I have become direction
Hessel Museum of Art
Santiago Silva Daza
Based on a process of research into the work and strategies of enigmatic artist stanley brouwn, I have become direction reflects on the artist’s evacuation of authorship, and the implications of this on curatorial methodology. Refusing biography, giving no interviews and explaining preciously little, brouwn actively deferred his subjectivity, resisting rote forms for interpreting an artist’s practice. This exhibition draws a selection of artist’s books and archival material together with a rare video work, mapping the artist’s evasion of exhibition conventions. I have become direction seeks out the indeterminate, associative and coincidental, proposing these as sources of the work’s ongoing significance.
